Straight and Narrow is a new-release variety (2017) that grows tall and skinny compared to other Lillypillies. This variety is considered a replacement for Syzigium ‘Pinnacle’, as it has the same size and growth habit but with resistance to the psyllid insects that cause blistering and deformation. It looks very similar to Pinnacle but tends to have a slight blue-tinge to the foliage.
Growing Straight & Narrow is as simple as growing any other lillypilly. Plant into well drained soil in full sun, feed and water regularly for maximum growth. Like all lillypillies, this variety needs to be clipped regularly to maintain its dense growth. Without clipping, lillypillies tend to grow into a small tree, with not foliage and the bottom and moderately dense foliage above.
Full sun is recommended for this plant to avoid it thinning out and weakening. If grown in good conditions, Straight and Narrow will be virtually pest free. May occasionally be attacked by aphids or mealybugs.
Prune lightly and regularly to encourage dense growth. Unpruned plants will become a small tree, which may not provide the screening you’re looking for. Can grow in part shade but maintains tighter growth in full sun. Does best in rich, well-drained soil. Won’t tolerate waterlogged soils. Use quality fertilizer such as Troforte or Organic Link regularly to produce strong, healthy growth.
