The Red Edge Echeveria, or Echeveria agavoides, is one of the easiest and most reliable Echeverias for the Brisbane climate. A stiff and upright form, this species loves the sun and will show best colours when it gets 4hrs+ of direct sun each day.
Like most Echeverias, it can suffer over summer if given too much or too little water. As such, plants are best grown in pots so that they may be moved as conditions require. Too much water, they often drop leaves or begin to rot at the base. Too little water, they appear very pale and stressed.
Flower spikes are attractive but are magnets for aphids and other pests. As such, flowers are best removed early to conserve energy for the plant. New growth can also be effected by aphids.
Echeveria agavoides is most commonly grown as a cultivar. Popular varieties include Lipstick, Corduroy, Romeo, Blue Moon, Ebony and Frank Reinelt.
Fairly easy to grow. Needs at least a few hours of direct sun to thrive. Not suitable as an indoor plant. Repot using a good quality Cacti & Succulent mix. Plants will benefit from a small amount of quality slow-release fertilizer such as Troforte added to the soil.
